  • augmenté de 71 % le taux de SAM (S-adénosylméthionine cellulaire), une molécule qui joue un rôle central comme donneur de groupes méthyle dans les réactions de méthylation ;

» – Lauren Eisen, Senior Marketing & Business Development Manager, Minerals and Nutrients, Balchem Corporation – Human Nutrition & Health.

Balchem’s Optifolin+®: A Study Highlights Its Potential for Healthy Aging and Epigenetic Health

A new study (1) published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements provides mechanistic insights into the biological activity of Balchem’s Optifolin+®, an ingredient that combines folate and choline. In a human cell model, it significantly increases the availability of a methyl donor, as well as the methylation of certain regions of DNA. These results support its potential for maintaining DNA integrity and stability. They reinforce its value for the development of products aimed at healthy aging and epigenetic health, according to Balchem.

High Methylation Capacity in a Human Liver Cell Model

According to Balchem, Optifolin+ provides seven times more methylating agents than other forms of folate and achieves a methylation capacity of 98%. The ingredient holds a patent granted in October 2023.

The study was conducted in collaboration with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The research evaluated the biological activity of Optifolin+ in human HepaRG cells over a 96-hour period.

In this model, 5-MTHF combined with choline:

  • increased cellular SAM (S-adenosylmethionine) levels by 71 percent—a molecule that plays a central role as a methyl group donor in methylation reactions;
  • increased methylation of certain DNA regions by up to 14 times compared to the level measured in control cells at the highest dose.

According to Balchem, these results support the role of Optifolin+ in epigenetic regulation, which is involved in maintaining DNA stability and genomic integrity.

Epigenetics: At the Heart of Healthy Aging

Epigenetic mechanisms are influenced, in particular, by the environment, diet, and lifestyle. They are increasingly being studied in the context of healthy aging.

Among the key mechanisms of epigenetic regulation is methylation, a cellular process in which methyl groups are added to certain molecules, particularly DNA. These changes can play a role in modulating gene expression without altering the genetic sequence itself.

Alterations in DNA methylation profiles or a lack of methyl-donor nutrients, such as folates, can contribute to genomic instability or disruptions over time.

Folates play a fundamental role in cellular function. However, certain factors associated with modern lifestyles, such as stress or a suboptimal diet, can affect the efficiency of methylation. For brands looking to innovate beyond traditional folate-based products, it is important to understand biological performance.” – Lauren Eisen, Senior Marketing & Business Development Manager, Minerals and Nutrients, Balchem Corporation – Human Nutrition & Health.
