Euromed: New clinical data highlight Pomanox®’s potential for skin health

A new clinical study published in Scientific Reports has investigated the effects of Pomanox®, Euromed’s standardised pomegranate extract, on several skin ageing parameters. Findings from the POMASKIN™ trial suggest potential benefits for facial pigmentation, hydration and elasticity, opening up further opportunities for beauty-from-within formulations.

Promising pigmentation results after four weeks

Conducted at Eurecat’s Nutrition and Health Unit in Spain, the randomised, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 66 women aged 30 to 65 with hyperpigmented facial spots.

Over 12 weeks, participants received either 367 mg or 700 mg of Pomanox® daily, or a placebo. A total of 64 participants were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis.

Exploratory analyses in the 367 mg/day group showed favourable changes compared with placebo in two pigmentation measures: a selected facial spot and the melanin index of the surrounding skin.

Differences were observed as early as four weeks. The favourable change in the surrounding skin’s melanin index persisted through week 12, while the selected spot’s melanin index also decreased more than in the placebo group by the end of the study.

Hydration and elasticity: findings requiring further investigation

At week 12, exploratory analysis showed a significantly more favourable change in skin hydration with 367 mg/day of Pomanox® compared with placebo. As hydration declined in the placebo group, the findings suggest that the extract may help maintain skin hydration under the study conditions.

Regarding elasticity, significant improvements from baseline were observed at weeks four and twelve with 700 mg/day, and at week twelve with 367 mg/day. However, in the overall study population, the comparison between 700 mg/day and placebo indicated a trend rather than a statistically conclusive difference.

Polyphenols and the microbiome: additional research avenues

Researchers also explored biological mechanisms that could help explain the skin-related findings.

Increased urinary levels of polyphenol metabolites, including urolithin A glucuronide, provided evidence of the absorption and metabolism of pomegranate compounds.

Exploratory skin and gut microbiome analyses also identified changes involving Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Prevotella and Akkermansia. These preliminary observations do not yet establish effects on skin barrier function or inflammation.

A new application for Euromed’s pomegranate extract

The POMASKIN™ trial extends previous research on Pomanox® in areas including exercise performance, cognition and cardiovascular health.

Pomanox® P30 is standardised to contain at least 30% punicalagins and is produced using Euromed’s proprietary water-based Pure-Hydro Process®.

For the Spanish botanical extract manufacturer, the new findings provide an additional clinical basis for exploring beauty-from-within applications, while highlighting the need for further research to confirm the observed benefits.
